Macular Degeneration

Protect Your Central Vision
Macular degeneration affects nearly 20 million U.S. adults and can severely impact central vision—making it hard to read, drive, or recognize faces. While damage is permanent, treatments can help slow its progression.
What is Macular Degeneration?
It’s the deterioration of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. As the macula weakens, vision blurs or develops dark spots in the center.
Causes & Risk Factors
Age (over 50), genetics, smoking, and health issues like diabetes or high blood pressure increase risk. Women are also more commonly affected.
Symptoms to Watch For
Early detection is key—schedule an exam if you notice changes.
Dry vs. Wet Macular Degeneration
Dry Macular Degeneration
Slow progression with thinning macular tissue and yellow deposits (drusen).
Wet Macular Degeneration
Less common but more severe; abnormal leaking blood vessels cause rapid vision loss.
Dry can progress to wet over time.

Treatment Options
AREDS Vitamins
Nutritional supplements can slow progression.
Intravitreal Injections
For wet AMD, anti-VEGF drugs are injected to block abnormal blood vessel growth.
